    Genetic and Breed Specific Diseases

  • Canine Health Problems by Breed - Specific dog breeds have propensities toward specific health problems. This list gives you, by breed, the most common afflictions. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but you should be aware of the common problems of your breed.
  • Canine Inherited Disorders Database - While some health problems may be due to the breed's build or size, some are indeed genetic problems. This online database lists, by breed, known genetic problems.
  • Canine Hip Dysplasia - This is a looseness in the joints, sometimes hips, sometime elbows, sometimes other joints, that can lead to pain and arthritis even in young dogs.
  • Orthapedic Foundation for Animals - Dogs that have been OFFA Certified have had their hips and other joints "tested" to determine the liklihood that they may become dysplastic. This is by no means a guarantee, but it's something you can use to get an idea of what may happen to your dog. Recently, the OFFA began to register cardiac problems as well as joint issues.
  • Canine Eye Registration Foundation - Like OFFA, CERF is a registry of dogs who have had their eyes tested for degenerative problems like glaucoma and cataracts. Again, a CERF rating does not guarantee or imply to problems, but it gives an idea of the possibility that problems might occur.
  • National Breed and Rescue Clubs - One of your best sources of research information when selecting a breed is either the National Breed Club or the National Breed Rescue for that breed.

    The PostScript

  • The Den - What does The ComputerGuy do when he's not on the show with Bob? He blogs about politics and life.
